Modern Garage Door Tech: Remote, Safety, LED Integration

The garage door world has come a long way in the last few decades, from mostly manual garages a generation ago to mechanical garage opening and closing methods today. Did you know, though, that even further modern technology improvements have continued to increase the capabilities and benefits of today’s garage door systems beyond simple mechanical opening and closing?

It’s true, and at Overhead Door Company, we’re happy to help clients with modern products in areas like garage door operators, motors and more. What are some of the areas of today’s technology that have made a big impact on convenience, security and other important garage door themes? This two-part blog series will go over several examples.

Remote Access Capabilities

One of the top new technologies to be found in garage door systems is the remote access capabilities that are now included in many models. This means that you’ll be able to open and close your garage door from anywhere – whether you’re pulling into your driveway or halfway around the world.

How does this work? Many different manufacturers have different approaches, but the basic idea is the same: you’ll have an app on your phone or another device that can communicate with the opener, telling it to open, close or stop. In some cases, you may also be able to see the status of your garage door (open or closed) and even get alerts if the door has been left open for a certain period of time.

If you have a home security system, you may even be able to integrate your garage door opener with it so that the door automatically opens when you disarm the alarm – no more fumbling for keys! – and closes when you arm it.

Improved Safety Features

In addition to the convenience of being able to control your garage door opener remotely, the new technology in these devices has also led to improved safety features. One such feature is the automatic reversing mechanism that is now required by law on all garage door openers sold in the United States.

This feature is designed to prevent injuries (and, unfortunately, deaths) that can occur when a person or object is in the path of the closing door. If the sensors that are mounted on either side of the door detect an obstacle, they will cause the door to reverse direction and open back up.

LED Lighting Integration

For years, garage door openers have included a light that turns on automatically when the door is opened and stays on for a minute or two after the door has been closed. The new technology in these lights, however, goes beyond simply being turned on by the opener – they can now be integrated with the opener itself, as well as other devices in your garage and home.

For example, many openers now include a feature that causes the light to turn on whenever the opener is used, whether that’s to open or close the door or just to activate the opener itself. This can be a great security measure, as it makes it more difficult for would-be burglars to break into your home.
