Modern Garage Door Tech: Cameras, Delivery, Smart Homes

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the simplest ways modern technology has improved the realm of garage doors. From remote openers and accessibility capabilities to safety features and many other areas, garage doors have come a long way from generations past, and technological advances have played a major role in that.

At Overhead Door Company, we’re here to offer a huge range of different modern garage door components, from garage door operators to various door materials and security features. What are some other ways technology has impacted this world? Here are several more examples.

Camera Integration

When it comes to home safety and security, there’s no doubt that technology has played a major role in improving things. One of the more recent advancements in this realm is the integration of cameras with garage door opener apps.

This means that you can not only see whether or not your garage door is open, but you can also get a live feed of what’s going on inside your garage at any given time. This is especially useful if you have children or pets who may be in the garage while you’re away from home.

Some camera-integrated garage door openers even come with two-way audio, so you can communicate with anyone who’s inside the garage (provided they’re within range of the camera).

Delivery Services

Through programs like Amazon Key and certain other related setups, the home delivery process has been revolutionized via a surprising source: Garage door technology. These products integrate with an app that allows delivery drivers to open your garage door when they arrive with a package, then close it once they’ve deposited the item inside.

This is an incredibly convenient way to receive packages, especially if you’re not going to be home when they’re scheduled to arrive. It also adds an extra layer of security, since the driver never has to step foot inside your home.

Of course, this technology is still in its early stages, so it’s not quite as widespread as some of the other things on this list. But it’s definitely a sign of things to come, and we’re excited to see how it develops in the future.

Smarter Home Integration

One of the most interesting aspects of modern garage door technology is its potential for integration with other smart home devices. For example, certain opener models can be integrated with Amazon’s Echo and Google’s Home products, allowing you to open and close your garage door with just your voice.

Other integrations are a bit more involved, but they can be just as useful. Smart thermostats, for instance, can be set to automatically adjust the temperature inside your garage based on whether or not the door is open. And if you have a smart home security system, you can integrate it with your garage door opener to receive alerts anytime the door is opened (or closed) when it shouldn’t be.
